When it comes to performance, one key element is how we express recognition.
You or a colleague just achieved something remarkable at work! How would you like to be acknowledged? Be honest. It’s not solely about money, though that can be a nice touch: maybe a shout-out during the next all-employee meeting? A thoughtful gift? A celebration with your team? And yes… a monetary reward?
At its core, employee recognition involves openly appreciating individuals’ contributions to your organization, and it plays a vital role in fostering a positive workplace environment. Cultures rich in recognition tend to see enhanced engagement, lowered turnover, and even boosted productivity.
Many organizations have some form of recognition program, yet “assuming” or “undervaluing” contributions remains a significant issue. Why is that? To delve deeper into workplace recognition, there was a study examining how people feel about recognition in their organisations, what it signifies for them, and their preferred methods of acknowledgment. The findings underscored the critical nature of recognition, the repercussions of missing the right moment to provide it, and the discrepancy between recognition given and what employees actually need.
One effective way to “reward” people is by utilising the concept of “appreciation language” when positive events occur, ensuring it’s not overused to manipulate employees.
Here are some thoughts to consider:
Use language that conveys positive sentiments on a personal level through verbal acknowledgment of the employee.
Show your gratitude and appreciation
Engage in meaningful actions that involve effort and planning on your part, whether it’s helping employees or offering concrete gestures (e.g., small attentions, gifts, or shared experiences).
Invest time
Dedicate exclusive attention for a specific period to those you wish to recognise through collaborative work, team-building activities, volunteering, or team dinners.
Take tangible actions (even if they involve money)
Provide something concrete that demonstrates attention and appreciation (gift cards, bonuses, or other forms of recognition, big or small).
