Caught up in our daily routines, especially during certain times of the year, it’s easy to focus on resolving emergencies and lose sight of our primary objectives.
Avoid being distracted by every issue
While addressing urgent matters is often necessary, it can also divert us from our main goals and lead to unintended consequences.
It’s clear we need to address some of these issues, but it’s equally important to be flexible like a mountain river and steer toward our relevant objectives.
Prioritize what truly matters
Take a moment to reassess your goals and their priorities.
What’s your main goal right now? As managers, we know it’s a challenge to stay focused with constant interruptions and new projects threatening to shift our plans.
Select your primary focus
If you had to concentrate on one thing this month, what would that ONE area of focus be? A month is a significant timeframe—long enough to set a course but short enough to keep objectives clear and attainable.
Outline your plan
By consistently keeping your attention on this specific element, what can you achieve? What results can you foresee? Remember that results are not standalone ones, often they remain connected and this connections are part of the diffciulty you may find.
Consider the consequences of losing focus
What impact will it have on you and your team if you don’t maintain focus on your defined goal? Again, make a detailed list of the consequences and examine how they relate to each other and to your expected outcomes to form a comprehensive view.
Clear the way and commit to it
What habits or distractions do you need to eliminate, or what should you instruct others not to pursue? Once you’ve established this list, stick to it as closely as possible. And in this fight you are not alone: you need to focus also on tasks you can delegate to your team to create the space necessary for greater attention on your main focus.
