Remote teams are very different from the physical ones in terms of forming and daily life. They are even different when looking at those that are “phygital” because alternate interactions lead to different and more complex relationships.
With this in mind, as it happens in life, you can get acquainted with potential problems and address them proactively or react to them. It is extremely important to decide how to handle them because not being aware and reacting to issues leads to loss of performance which,as a manager, you cannot afford.
So what to look for?
A) Value the differences. What seems identical or similar may not be. Spotting and working out the identities you may find, determines your capability to customise your approach and, while maintaining the overall approach, give a slightly more tailored set of action. Doing so requires effort and understanding because in virtual world the tight perceptions you have in person completely disappear, making the picture more blurred
B) Even with a strong company culture, not all people are behaving similarly. Cultural differences arising from the different region in which they operate and, sometimes even core values (e.g. values political, educational, …) make the expected reactions difficult to forecast. In person is easier to spot them in time and equalise; remotely you have to look for signs well in advance and then plan accordingly.
C) Interaction benefit from physical presence. Lack of opportunities to get to know each other in person, can lead to a greater at least superficial knowledge of who is part of the team, as well as helps to find a balance of roles and overlaps. Try to get in touch in person from time to time so to compensate at least in part.
D) Communication is critical but difficult to achieve effectively. It’s not true that remotely we have less opportunities to communicate. Instead is true that the quality of this communication time is most of the time not adequate: boring calls, lack of concentration, they all lead to lower performance and, all in all, to isolation risking to turn each person into an island
